FRAGILE ESQUIF, D 2011, 35mm, 1:1.85, color, sound, 17 min.

Dressed completely in white a man gets lost in a luminous void of space. His thoughts spin in spirals. All activity in this vast nothingness shows no result. When he finally settles in a boat for fishing a message pop up in a bottle…

Director, actor, rostrum camera, editing: Thomas Bartels
Photography: Yvonne Salzmann, Sonja Wegener
Music and sound-design: Wolfgang in der Wiesche
Shakuhatchi: Uwe Walter
Funding: nordmedia Fonds GmbH

IKILIIKKUJA – PERPETUUM MOBILE, D 2005, 35mm, 1:1.66, b/w, sound, 5 min.

Two men, one bottle. Black and white. Yin and yang. What is empty for one is full for the other. Peltola who is the main character in Aki Kaurismäki’s film The Man Without A Past adds a place- and timeless folk music. With very few notes, it says all there is to say.

MICHANEVOMAI – ICH ERSINNE EINE LIST, D 2004, 35mm, 1:1.37, color, sound, 9 min. 30sec.

A poetic journey through a mechanical universe. Electric shadows of men and women circle around each other in endless loops. They finally meet in THE KISS. But it’s just a dream.

(added June, 2019) excerpt from: Wild wonder inside and out at Alchemy 2019

New creative director Michael Pattison encouraged audiences to “embrace the strange” at this invigorating festival where the experiences counted for as much as the work.

Ben Nicholson

“Colour also played a significant role in one of the other ‘In Focus’ events – that of the work of Deborah S. Phillips. In a less conventional screening, Phillips presented her own work including her red-hued blend of collage, animation and text Capsicum (2008), and her overlaid, superimposed examination of green Im Grünen Bereich (2017). Phillips has spent a decade utilising found objects, natural materials and text to create colour studies. In the screening she revealed that she still hasn’t quite worked out how she feels about blue, and so the session opened up into a freeform discussion about the associations of the colour and how different languages approach it – all while two slide projectors clacked through cerulean compositions that slowly seemed to conform to the emotive qualities being described and discussed by the audience.”
