PARTIAL SEQUENCE

A retrospective foresight, or a forward-looking retrospective.

My decision in favour of ‘PARTIAL SEQUENCE’ for the application for ‘AI.ART – Symbiosis or Contrast?’ is unusual, as the painting is 26 years old and is dated January 1998 in the signature. It depicts a figure or person working on a computer that cannot be recognised in detail. His counterpart is an undefined space and a virtual ‘apparition’, be it part of the screen display, a being or spirit of ‘artificial intelligence’, which did not yet exist at that time and yet already did. I had my second laptop at the time, necessary for commuting between China and Germany, my mobile studio and control centre for the projects, exhibitions, film projects, theatre projects and music festivals I was working on both here and there.

I remember becoming aware early on of the discussion about whether a computer should be switched off, because a thinking ‘being’, as it was already understood to be, could not simply be switched off for ethical reasons. Who is still in control now…?

AI.ART – Symbiose oder Kontrast? ist eine freie Zusammenstellung KI-generierter Werke, traditionell geschaffener Werke, sowie Hybriden aus beiden Herangehensweisen und ermöglicht innovative Einblicke in die vielschichtigen Positionen der Künstler*innen.

Dans un engagement constant en faveur de la création contemporaine, Light Cone
